# Designing YouTube Thumbnails That Get Clicks
We've A/B tested 1000+ thumbnails. Here's what we learned.
## The Three-Second Rule
Viewers decide in 3 seconds. Your thumbnail needs:
1. One clear focal point
2. Readable text (3 words max)
3. Emotional expression
## What Works
### Faces
- Close-up crops perform best
- Exaggerated expressions
- Eye contact with viewer
### Colors
- High contrast backgrounds
- Complementary color schemes
- Avoid YouTube red (blends in)
### Text
- Bold, sans-serif fonts
- Outline or shadow for readability
- Never repeat the title
## What Doesn't Work
- Busy, cluttered designs
- Small text
- Low contrast
- Generic stock photos
- Too much information
## Our Template System
For every video type:
- Talking head: Face + 2-3 words
- Tutorial: Result + curiosity gap
- Story: Key moment + emotion
Test two versions for every video. Data beats opinions.
